If you ever are in the area, take the bus from Tralee to Dingle and admire the unfolding scenery, and amble around the marina by the seaside. I can say that this was the right setting for Brett's music because as you know the lyrics on Slow Attack are about rugged landscapes, as he told Philip King from "Other Voices" inspired by the poetry of Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney. I had a great day, it was fascinating to see how the church piano of St James Church of Ireland was getting prepared for the evening. The army of young volunteers checked every detail, one of them practised Beethoven's "For Elise" until the piano tuner came in and checked every key of it. Such attention to detail! The atmosphere at the rehearsals was informal without being casual: there was serious work done there. It was a total delight to hear Angie rehearsing on the piano. I don't know what her magic secret is but one could listen to her playing for hours, and ditto for Brett's singing. One member of the audience remarked later that he has the perfect voice for this kind of moody songs. With only a piano, albeit played by a virtuoso, there is little room for error. The audience and most of all the TV-crew had a relaxed time listening to the five songs on the set (Ashes of Us, The Hunted, Frozen Roads, Leave me Sleeping, Hymn), first of all because they are gorgeous songs, but you know that already, but also delivered faultlessly which meant that the TV crew just could record everything in one go. The warm reception and the applause was well-deserved - and this is after all a discerning public who had snapped up all the ticket in the first minutes of sale and is used to fantastic singer-songwriters coming to Dingle to play at St James Church. Add to this hospitable organisers and locals, and also the lovely hospitality of Brett, Vanessa and Angie who took a little time to chat to me - and that's me being very happy. It's one thing going to a fantastic concert in an amazing location, but to be friends with someone as amazing as Brett is simply out-of-this-world. Lovely man. I also doff my cap to Fionn Regan and his band, they are very good and a pleasure to watch, and also to the Temper Trap all the way from Australia - "Other Voices" surely knows where to find good music. Thanks you, Vanessa, Brett and Angie for a lovely holiday break in Ireland and I hope you come back soon.
